When Inuyasha arrived back to the feudal era without Lady Kagome, I knew he would take it the hardest. I had never seen him so void of energy.

He didn’t talk to anyone and kept mostly to himself for the longest time. For a while, Shippou’s annoying antics didn’t even phase him.

Day in and day out he had a routine. He’d jump down from his tree, do some destruction, eat when needed, scowl at his brother, then go back to the tree for a night’s rest. Occassionally he would stop by to see Sango and I, but very rarely.

It was the night before Sango and I were to be wed, when I told her I needed to go see him. His behavior had gone on long enough, and I refused to see him suffer so destructively anymore.

I wandered to the forest looking for him. He wasn’t in the tree, so I looked the one other place I knew he’d be found: the well.

Sure enough, he was sitting with his back against it, head low, seemingly lost in thought. I decided not to speak and just went to sit down next to him.
After a few moments silence he said

“Why did they take her away from me? Did the kamis look down and think this was all a sick joke?” he said in a gruff voice.

“I cannot answer that, but I do not think that was the last we’ve seen of her. Knowing her, she’s on the other side just as lonely as you” I replied.

He seemed to think about it then said

“I suppose. Still….it’s just so different without her. I’d give anything just to hear her voice again. Hell, I’d even let her ‘sit’ me if I knew she was near.”

I almost laughed. The thought of Inuyasha willing to receive a ‘sit’command from Kagome was amusing. In the end I decided against it because I noticed his body started to shake.

“It just isn’t fair! Why must everything I love be taken away from me!” he shouted.

I couldn’t give him a real answer, because I didn’t know myself. We all missed her very much. Perhaps not as much as he, but we all could feel the pain of her sudden leave.

“Why?” he repeated softer this time. In that moment, he leaned his head into my shoulder and sobbed. I was shocked at the sudden outburst, but slung my arms around him awkwardly and let him cry.

“Shh” I said softly.

“Lady Kagome will be back to us. I’m not sure when, but I just have this feeling she will be with us again someday” I said giving him a pat on the back. I kissed him on the forehead just underneath his bangs and continued to comfort him.

Eventually his crying ceased, and he looked up at me almost in bewilderment. Almost instantly he detatched himself from my hold, and blushed an odd shade of red.

“Wha…when…how?” he started unable to form a complete thought.

I wanted to respond, but couldn’t think of the right thing to say. Finally after several awkward moments he stood up and spoke.

“Look, you’re a great friend and all but….if you ever tell anyone about this, I will use Tessaiga to chop your balls off and then you want be able to have those children of yours you keep talking about got it?” he said with a stern and menancing look towering over me.
I stood up as well during his speech, and was cowering back, but gave him a response.

“Yes, I understand Inuyasha” I said.

“Good. I’ll see you at the wedding tomorrow” he said as he turned to walk away. Once he was a good few inches away, I started to turn myself, when he ran back after me and gave me a hug.

Again, I patted his back as he said

“Thanks Miroku”

After that, he sped away with his full speed and I looked on. I finally moved to go to my home which would soon inhabit my beautiful wife to be.

It was my last night as a single man. I almost strayed from my path him to go find some women in the village, but instead, I settled down with a cup of sake and fell asleep.

The wedding went by beautifully, Inuyasha as our best man. To see him standing there without Kagome was a bit odd for us, but we all still had a good time. After all, who would’ve thought that 2 years later we would be at theirs doing the same thing….
