I watch her run through the fields with Jaken smiling and laughing the whole time and wonder, how is this child so happy? The trauma this child has gone through is unexplainable and certainly must have been painful, but yet she finds comfort in me, a demon with a heart of stone. It’s not to say that I have no emotion, I’m just really good at concealing it.

The simple things make her smile. The flowers in the field, when Jaken falls in a nearby spring, when a butterfly flies by ….all normal occurrences, and yet they brighten her world.

When she smiles it makes me want to smile too. Most of the time I keep my face void of any emotion, but sometimes I give in and return a smile. Such a simple act, but to her it means the world. I reserve those moments just for her, and when she giggles because of my stupid smile, it makes me feel warm inside and melts the coldness in my heart away.

I know I cannot keep her forever. One day she will make a wonderful wife and mother, but neither will be to me. As much as I wish for this to happen, I will not follow the footsteps of my late father only to die and then have her die as well due to the prejudices of human and demon alike.

For now, I will just continue to smile with her and enjoy the simpler things in life.
